Back then, if I recall correctly, the Free version was limited to eight sequencer tracks (with unlimited mixer channels) which was certainly better than the four sequencer tracks that we get for free nowadays. There’s A LOT you can do with the free version, though, especially if you intend on using it as your secondary DAW for starting new projects and experimenting with modular plugin setups. There are no nag screens or other similar annoyances in MuLab Free, apart from the soft white noise that you’ll hear in case you hit one of its limitations (up to four sequencer tracks and eight VST plugins per session). "Hermann Seib" isn't a program but the dude who does VSTHost/SAVIHost - they're simple host programs to run & play a VST instrument w/o an actual DAW. The downside? I don't know anyone who's used it or even tried it beside myself and some random people on the internet. Podium - I haven't tried it out in years, but it might be a somewhat serious contender. Mu.Lab Free - very limited, as far as I can remember.
